In order to support optimal wellness, it is wise to avoid eating foods that contain pesticide and herbicide residues. They are toxic to our nervous systems. They can disrupt our endocrine systems, and increase the risks of chronic diseases and cancer. Did you know organophosphate pesticides are neurotoxic and have been researched for use in chemical warfare?  Herbicide, Glyphosate, which has been widely used in commercial American agricultural crops such as corn, and soy beans, as well in ornamental use as Roundup, continues to be be proven to be bad for health.

Children are especially at risk to be damaged by the toxic effects of pesticide and herbicide residues in produce, due to their sensitive nervous systems and lower body weight.

In our fast paced world it’s not always easy, nor practical to eat only organically grown produce. For some, the cost of organic food is too costly. The answer is to avoid or eat organically, those fruits and vegetables that are highest in pesticides and herbicides.  And we have non-organic commercially grown produce that is very low in or does not contain pesticides. These are safer to eat. Bottom line – we need to be aware of what we consume to make healthier choices. The Acupuncture & Wellness Clinic of Jonathan Breslow is dedicated to helping our patients and the public make healthier food choices to support optimal wellness.

Fortunately, this differentiation has been done for us by the Environmental Working Group. Their first list is called the Dirty Dozen. These are the fruits and vegetables that are highest in pesticide residues. It is recommended that produce from this group only be eaten only as organically grown avoided or greatly minimized. Note that these are listed in order of highest concentration of pesticides with the first one listed, being the highest.

They are as follows:
1. Apples (highest in pesticides)
2. Strawberries
3. Grapes
4. Celery
5. Peaches
6. Spinach
7. Sweet Bell Peppers
8. Nectarines – imported
9. Cucumbers
10. Potatoes
11. Cherry tomatoes
12. Hot Peppers
13. Domestic Blueberries
14. Lettuce
15. Imported Snap peas
16. Kale / Collard Greens

Note:  Commercially grown non organic corn and soy beans and their by products, ie. corn oil are known to have residues of Glyphosate, are genetically modified and should be avoided.

The Clean Fourteen are non-organically grown, yet are lowest in pesticide residues. They are safe to eat at home or in restaurants where we have less control over the quality of produce. They are:

1. Asparagus
2. Avocado
3. Cabbage
4. Cantaloupe
5. Eggplant
6. Grapefruit
7. Kiwi
8. Mango
9. Mushrooms
10. Onions
11. Papaya (Hawaiian may be genetically modified & not recommended)
12. Pineapple (Hawaiian may be genetically modified & not recommended)
13. Frozen Green peas
14. Sweet potatoes
